Golf enthusiasts, gather around! The Indiana women’s golf team has been making quite a splash lately, and their recent performance at the Florida State Match Up from March 21-23 has certainly put them in the spotlight. Competing at the stunning Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Florida, the Hoosiers showcased their skills against a competitive field, finishing in third place overall — an impressive feat worth celebrating for sure!

The Tournament Rundown

In a field of 13 teams, Indiana’s collective score came to 887, which placed them 23 over par. They secured their spot behind the big guns of No. 7 Florida State University, which finished at an astonishing 22 under par, and Illinois, which wrapped up at 20 over par. It was certainly a battle on the greens, but Indiana held their ground and demonstrated their potential.

A Rollercoaster of Rounds

The tournament kicked off with Indiana shooting a 17-over-par 305, which set the tone for a strong start, placing them firmly in third. However, things got a little tricky in the second round as they slipped to fourth with a score of 5-over-par 293. Despite this minor setback, the Hoosiers regrouped and pulled off a fantastic final round with just 1 over par, allowing them to reclaim their much-deserved third place finish.

Spotlight on Caroline Smith

Now, let’s talk individual performances because there were some truly notable achievements! Redshirt senior Caroline Smith was the star of the show, finishing the tournament at 4 under par. Her rounds showcased her talent beautifully: a 3-over-par 75 in the first round, followed by a strong 1-under-par 71 in the second, and wrapping it all up with a fantastic 3-under-par 69 in her final round. Although she finished in fourth place, let’s not forget she was just a mere 15 strokes behind the tournament winner, Mirabel Ting of Florida State, who is currently ranked No. 1 on the Division I Scoreboard. Ting continues to impress with her fifth individual victory of the season!

Rookies Rising

But wait, there’s more! Freshman Cara Heisterkamp also made waves, setting four new career lows throughout the tournament. With a total score of 227, she tied for seventh place alongside two other competitors at 4 over par. Highlighting her remarkable performance was her third round score of 70, which included a bogey-free front nine and five birdies. Talk about a stellar showing!

Additional Highlights from the Team

Other team members also contributed significantly to the overall performance. Junior Madison Dabagia finished tied for 19th place with a 9-over-par 225. Meanwhile, redshirt junior Maddie May landed in a tie for 26th place at 11-over-par 227. Each player showed great resilience and teamwork throughout the competition, enhancing the Hoosiers’ reputation in collegiate golf.

Looking Ahead

The excitement doesn’t stop here! With just one tournament left in the regular season, the team is gearing up for the Terese Hession Buckeye Invitational on April 12-13 at the OSU Scarlet Course. Soon after that, the Hoosiers will head into the Big Ten Championship from April 18-20, aiming to defend their title and secure back-to-back championships! It’s going to be an exhilarating month for Indiana women’s golf, and fans can’t wait to see how they perform next!
